The sketchbook is the place where I can plan compositions and character designs with no pressure to produce final outcomes. Ideas are free to flow, come and go, sometimes making it to the Final Cut where they will be drawn up on blocks and carved in the future. I always travel with sketchbooks: it is like a research journal recording street characters, locations and environments which may inform future works, whilst also experimenting with different materials and processes of working on paper. Surrounded by the unique architecture of each locale and the people who live there, reportage drawing allows me to focus on the moment and pick out the atmospheres and vibrations of a place: observing and drawing these creates many memories.
